General note

This model and others were used in the planning and studies led by Bruce Burdick to help with the design of the new campus in Pasadena. Information taken from At Art Center, November 1971 issue: In talking of the facility planning Bruce Burdick says, "The solution to our new campus facilities comes directly from the educational process of the college itself. Out of our methods and attitudes, we are creating the components that will foster a total learning. We are concerned with the whole education of a designer and this means creating an environment that encourages cooperative action. The educational process at Art Center College of Design should achieve a synergistic effect from all the parts of the college, encouraging cross use of facilities by students and instructors. This goal has directed the planning of the college. "Some factors that affect this planning must be considered. One, the changing role of the instructor and the students as the student matures and develops in his field. At first, the student is a receiver and the instructor the transmitter. Later these roles reverse as the instructor becomes more of a receiver/critic, and the student does the transmitting. Two, while the instructor contact is required throughout the day in the foundation courses, in a combination of lecture and personal instruction, in the junior and senior years a more independent relationship exists. The student is generating ideas and projects and the instructor now functions as critic and resource. These changes require facilities suitable to both situations. "Three prime needs have shaped the facility planning: 1. The need for space that reflects and encourages our educational process. 2. The need for space that recognizes the changing roles of both student and instructor. 3. The need for space that services the student body and the administration, such as shop, film and photography areas, library, cafeteria, auditorium, and student store."
