At Art Center, Vol. 3, No. 4, September 1984: Probing the future To: Art Center College of Design students Subject: Probe V-First for the 21st From: The Design Staff, Ford Motor Company "...You will be required to design a specialty vehicle of the late 1990's and beyond, a vehicle which on the one hand must be realistic, but on the other must fire the imagination with inspired design and feature innovations..." The above is taken from a memo describing Ford Motor Company's summer project for Art Center's advanced transportation design students. The Probe series of projects at Ford have been studies into how the efficiencies and aesthetics of functional aerodynamic styling can affect car exteriors and how ergonomics sets the parameters for interior design. For more than a year, Ford designers have been involved with the Probe V project; in only 14 weeks, commented Ford designers, Art Center students have come up with similar design solutions! Walt Gollwitzer, Design Manager, International Design Studio, Ford, described the design process during a recent crit session, "Everything in design is a tradeoff. Each interesting new idea affects the total design." Students working on the Probe project must consider how each component of their design interrelates with others and, most importantly, with the driver and passengers within. And, of course, they must create "sexy looking" driving machines to boot. A tall order in a short 13 weeks, required in Art Center classes.
