Developments at Art Center, February 1983: General Motors Sponsors Project Based on "Lean Machine" This term advanced transportation design students in classes taught by Keith Teter and Richard Hutting are contributing to the development of a unique, experimental concept from the GM Advance Product Engineering labs. GM's "lean machine," which exists as an operating prototype, is a three-wheeled vehicle comparable to a motorcycle in size, weight and fuel efficiency. The driver sits in an enclosed, elongated pod which rotates from side to side above another pod housing the engine; the rotation allows the driver to lean into turns, thus maintaining the vehicle's stability. The students have been asked to develop individual designs based on these engineering principles and intended to appeal to a market of students or young adults purchasing their first personal transportation vehicle. As an alternative, they may explore designs for a four-wheeled micro-car as well. The principal supervisor of the project is Len Casillo, chief designer in the Oldsmobile studio.
