General note

Developments at Art Center, October 1972: Volvo Presents Art Center Design Project AB Volvo, Car Division, of Gothenburg, Sweden, one of Europe's leading automotive corporations, has established a design project for Art Center's advanced transportation design students. Volvo's chief designer, Jan Wilsgaard, a 1966 graduate of Art Center, visited the college early in October to present the problem which involves a two-dimensional package design for a contemporary five-passenger family automobile. One of Volvo's senior engineers, Jan Lake, will visit the class for a mid-project critique. The assignment will occupy about seven weeks of the current term, and the students' finished design drawings will be forwarded to Sweden in January for the final critique. Funds allocated by Volvo to this project include a $2,000 grant to Art Center.

General note

Developments at Art Center, March 1973: Volvo Presents Design Competition Awards Robert Sinclair, president of Volvo Western Distributing Company, visited Art Center on March 6 for an award presentation to the winning students in last semester's transportation design competition. Solutions to the assignment for the design of a five-passenger family sedan were judged by Volvo's principle executives and design staff in Sweden. First prize and a check for $1,000 went to Edward Bretschger, now an eighth semester transportation design major. Second prize and $600 was won by Michael Crosby, who graduated in January and is now a designer with GM in Detroit. And third prize and $400 was presented to Michael Miernik, another eighth semester student. Art Center also received an unrestricted grant of $2,000 from Volvo.
