General note
DaimlerChrysler sponsored project: Breaking the paradigm of the small car DaimlerChrysler believes that there is a big future for small cars and vehicles for the North American market. In this Funded Educational Project, students of Art Center's Transportation Design department created exciting, advanced, innovative solutions for future generations of vehicles that will use minimal road-space and energy. Small is not cheap. Think cell-phones and digital cameras: miniaturization is occurring everywhere as an expression of sophistication, style, technology and function. So the question is: how to convey a sense of passion, quality, safety and craftsmanship in an automobile with a small footprint? DaimlerChrysler also places great emphasis on thorough packaging and interior design, and although there will be a maximum size stipulated by DaimlerChrysler, students were encouraged to choose novel approaches to technology and package layouts. Students were also asked to consider that Baby Boomers will become an extremely significant proportion of the American market over the coming years. Their demands and aspirations should be as important for this project as those of other age groups.
