Biographical history

The origins of CSE can be traced to the mid-1980s with the Student Counseling Office, led by director Rosa Zaldivar-Farrer. In addition to student counseling, this office created the International Student Guides, Art Resources & Supplies Directories, and Health Resources Directories. In 2003 that department was expanded and became the Office of Student Life, under a newly formed Student Affairs department. Student Life oversaw such student services as: health insurance, counseling, international student advisement, housing, student organizations, and student events. In May 2009, in an effort to increase visibility and focus on the students, the Office of Student Life was renamed Center for the Student Experience and merged with the Dean of Students Office, newly located in a larger and more accessible room across from the Library. With this change, CSE began overseeing new student orientation, previously managed by Admissions.

Content and structure elements

Scope and content

The Center for the Student Experience collection consists of materials created and distributed by the CSE. The administrative files in Series 1 reflect their work with student orientations, international students, events, and the Student Leadership Award. Series 2 and 3 have student handbooks and health insurance plans respectively. Included in Series 4 of this collection are records from student organizations, except Art Center Student Government which has its own collection (RG 54.03). Series 5 contains The Installment, a typically monthly newsletter of announcements and wellness tips. Series 6 houses student-designed t-shirts that are distributed to new students at orientation.

Images from CSE-sponsored events starting in the mid-1980s can be found in the Photograph collection.
