The Harold Stegman papers consist of a silent film he created as a student and a book of photographs that supplemented the project. The workprint footage documents the operations of the California Production Service of Southern California, a petroleum company. Also included are two articles about Stegman’s professional work.
The Jason Hailey papers are mainly photographs taken by or of Hailey while he was a student in the Photography Department. Also included are a course announcement, syllabus, and photographs from when he returned to Art Center as an instructor. The exhibition announcement is for a photography show he was in with other Art Center alumni.
The Richard Hartt photographs consist of a single portrait of Photography Department faculty member C. K. Eaton. The image was probably taken by a student for a class assignment and captures Eaton's fun personality.
The Illustration Department fonds is a top level archival unit that encompasses everything in the Archives created by the Illustration department. Under the fonds-level are the following collections: Illustration Department collection of documents, Photograph collection, and Video collection.
The Graduation Collection consists mainly of the programs and videos for each ArtCenter graduation. The programs list the graduating students (by department in later years) and the commencement speakers. The student promotional materials are cards and handouts created by the students and distributed at Grad Show. The student-produced Grad Books contain photographs of the graduating students in the spirit of a traditional yearbook, while rarely an actual book. The Graduation Posters are similar to the Grad Books with photos of the students. This collection also includes copies of commencement speeches and a few examples of ArtCenter diplomas.
The Mel Shapiro papers are his correspondence with Art Center Registrar Karla Martell as he inquires about the Photography program and then submits his portfolio and application. Of interest is his Personal Profile, a four-page form required of all applicants, that asks for demographic data as well as professional objectives and whether or not a prospective student has good taste.
The John Coleman papers consist mainly of photographs of an Art Center trip to Japan. Coleman, along with President Edward A. Adams, Transportation faculty George Jergenson and alumnus Frank Y. Nakamura (PROD 1956), went to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Kyoto from November 3 to December 21, 1956 to conduct a series of clinics, lectures, and factory visits to discuss and observe contemporary industrial design.
Newsletters, minutes, correspondence, photographs, and other materials document the planning activities, events and meetings of the Art Center Wives Club. The majority of the documents is the club newsletters which provide information regarding the club and its members. Often the newsletters included annual schedules, membership lists, and synopses of meeting minutes. The second largest group of materials is minutes and mostly mirrors what can be found in the newsletters. Correspondence includes letters to the general membership, thank you notes, and invitations to Art Center Wives Club events such as the new student reception and an Annual Student Faculty party. Guidelines and suggestions for how to run meetings, program schedules, and questionnaires sent to the members all provide additional insight into the club’s activities. A play script written by a club member and performed for new students, is a humorous look at the wives’ view of their husbands’ experiences at Art Center. Two photographs also document the women working on the play.
The Joseph Weston papers are original artwork and digital photographs of artwork made by Weston (GRPK 1958) when he was a student. Also included are Weston's memoirs of Art Center and his first job after graduation.
Accreditation reports submitted to both the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and to the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) provide a tremendous amount of insight into Art Center's curriculum, financial health, and administrative policies. Both draft and final versions of self studies detail such information as enrollment statistics, curriculum development, finances, education and experience of the faculty, and campus facilities (including the Library). In addition, reports filed by the accrediting agencies after site visits are also illuminating. The bulk of the material relates directly to Art Center, but two items are more general: an accreditation report which assesses its influences on universities and colleges in the West by Keith Warner for WASC (1977), and a directory of National Schools of Art (1978).
Mostly artwork and some documents from the estate of Mary Vartikian, who taught at Art Center from the mid-1950s - 1986. Collection includes: numerous sketches and drawings, Art Center documents and publications, 11 costume design paintings, slides of Vartikian's work and of her teaching, 6 paintings, portfolio of photographic prints taken by Vartikian, 3 photographic prints of Mary Vartikian and George Harris, portfolio of student work, 1 collage (design for "Diggins" painting), George Harris book, "Nonsense and Numbers."
