These International Initiatives files document the programs and projects of the department, including Designmatters, from its inception in 2001. The bulk of the collection, the files of Series 2, documents Designmatters projects such as the Nyumbani village in Kenya and class sponsorships. Series 3 contains materials related to the biennial Art Center Design Conference, from initial planning to post-conference feedback. The Centro de Diseño y Arte documented in Series 4 is a Mexican art school established under the guidance of Art Center faculty and staff. Departmental computer files are on CDs in Series 5. Series 6 consists of posters advertising Designmatters programs, as well as a few of student work.
The Irene Vermeers papers consist almost entirely of photographs of Art Center School in the mid-1930s, especially faculty portraits and student work. Some of her images were less formal and capture rare candid images of students. The bulk of the collection is photographs of an Industrial Design Department class project from the mid-1930s taught by Kem Weber, whose objective was to design and build a model for a future Art Center campus to be located on Wilshire Boulevard.
Also included in this collection are Art Center Photography faculty Al King's color theory notebooks and the camera and tripod she used as a student.
The J. Lloyd LeMaster papers are photographs of LeMaster and his friends as students, including an image of Al King's classroom. Also included is an enrollment letter and receipt for his first class at Art Center.
The Jason Hailey papers are mainly photographs taken by or of Hailey while he was a student in the Photography Department. Also included are a course announcement, syllabus, and photographs from when he returned to Art Center as an instructor. The exhibition announcement is for a photography show he was in with other Art Center alumni.
The John Coleman papers consist mainly of photographs of an Art Center trip to Japan. Coleman, along with President Edward A. Adams, Transportation faculty George Jergenson and alumnus Frank Y. Nakamura (PROD 1956), went to Tokyo, Osaka, Nagoya, and Kyoto from November 3 to December 21, 1956 to conduct a series of clinics, lectures, and factory visits to discuss and observe contemporary industrial design.
The Jonathan Simle papers are photographs taken by Simle while he was a student, including portraits of Edward A. "Tink" Adams and Richard Avedon. Also included is an enrollment packet sent to Simle upon his admission to Art Center.
The Joseph Weston papers are original artwork and digital photographs of artwork made by Weston (GRPK 1958) when he was a student. Also included are Weston's memoirs of Art Center and his first job after graduation.
The Kenneth Staley papers are mainly his memoir that documents his experiences at Art Center before and after World War II, his involvement during the war as a rifleman, and his career at General Electric Company. Photocopies of his sketches, a photograph of himself during the war, and the original letter from Art Center confirming his enrollment (1939) are included.
Collection contains the personal and professional papers of Leah Hoffmitz Milken, including work done by Hoffmitz Milken for Letterform Design, her personal design firm; research and materials related to courses she taught at ArtCenter College of Design and other schools; and work by her students at ArtCenter and other schools.
Items in the collection are predominantly visual and include sketches of letterforms and typefaces; printing proofs; posters; photographs; and a small collection of student work on CDs. There is relatively little correspondence or original writings.

The Lorraine Streeter photographs were collected by Streeter while she was Director of the Photography Department. The collection consists mainly of class photos and student work. In many of the class photos, the students pose with a sculpture of a man's head.
The Marion Strahl Boyer papers consist mainly of photographs taken by Strahl during Art Center Photography Department field trips in 1942. Of interest is a trip to Yosemite with instructor Ansel Adams. Also included are photocopies of two magazine articles about Art Center photography students and six advertisements for Art Center School.
Mostly artwork and some documents from the estate of Mary Vartikian, who taught at Art Center from the mid-1950s - 1986. Collection includes: numerous sketches and drawings, Art Center documents and publications, 11 costume design paintings, slides of Vartikian's work and of her teaching, 6 paintings, portfolio of photographic prints taken by Vartikian, 3 photographic prints of Mary Vartikian and George Harris, portfolio of student work, 1 collage (design for "Diggins" painting), George Harris book, "Nonsense and Numbers."
