The reports in Series 2 include Admission Statistics reports, statistics on enrollment, grades, and inquiries by prospective students.

Printed Materials

The Printed Materials in Series 4 are mainly handouts to prospective students, including brochures and “View”, which is geared toward high school students.

Admissions Department records

This collection consists of files and printed materials created by the Admissions department from the 1930s through 2007. The bulk of the collection is statistic reports on incoming students.

The Administrative Files of Series 1 include form letters used by the department. In addition to Admission Statistics reports in Series 2, there are statistics on enrollment, grades and inquiries by prospective students. The restricted Portfolio Review Logs in Series 3 list all the prospective students by the date they brought their portfolios in to be reviewed, and whether or not they were accepted.

The Printed Materials in Series 4 are mainly handouts to prospective students, including brochures and “View”, which is geared toward high school students. Series 5 consists of general recruitment posters. The 2006 posters feature artwork by alumni Calef Brown (ILLU 1988) and Ann Elliot Cutting (PHOT 1987).

Kenneth Staley papers

The Kenneth Staley papers are mainly his memoir that documents his experiences at Art Center before and after World War II, his involvement during the war as a rifleman, and his career at General Electric Company. Photocopies of his sketches, a photograph of himself during the war, and the original letter from Art Center confirming his enrollment (1939) are included.

Marion Strahl Boyer papers

The Marion Strahl Boyer papers consist mainly of photographs taken by Strahl during Art Center Photography Department field trips in 1942. Of interest is a trip to Yosemite with instructor Ansel Adams. Also included are photocopies of two magazine articles about Art Center photography students and six advertisements for Art Center School.

Virginia Iden Ferguson papers

The Virginia Iden Ferguson papers are three letters from the Art Center School. A 1941 letter is to her parents requesting Virginia attend an additional year. A 1959 letter serves as her student record and lists the classes she took. Also included is a one-page "extra" to the alumni newsletter "Horizon Line."

Mel Shapiro papers

The Mel Shapiro papers are his correspondence with Art Center Registrar Karla Martell as he inquires about the Photography program and then submits his portfolio and application. Of interest is his Personal Profile, a four-page form required of all applicants, that asks for demographic data as well as professional objectives and whether or not a prospective student has good taste.

Art Center School papers, 1944-1947

This folder contains three papers from Hammer's time at Art Center: a 1944 tuition bill for $50, his student identification card, and an Exposure Record developed by Ansel Adams, circa 1945.

Correspondence, 1954-1955

Magazine articles and advertisements, 1935-1942

This folder includes photocopies of two magazine articles, both from November 1942, and six advertisements for Art Center School. Strahl is on the cover of and featured in Minicam Photography. The cover photo was shot by her classmate Bill Meriwether (PHOT 1947). Seven Art Center photography students, including Strahl, are featured in the Popular Photography article. The six advertisements were published in U. S. Camera magazine from 1935 to 1941.

Letters, 1941-1959

A letter to Mr. and Mrs. Iden from President Edward A. Adams encouraging the continued enrollment of their daughter, Virginia Iden (PHOT 1942) in the Photography track. Adams refers to the change in the employment market due to World War II in the letter. Her student record signed by Registrar Karla Martell. One page newsletter for Alumni noting Art Center's recent successes, 1959.
