Biographical history

Mary Vartikian was born in Armenia in 1917 and immigrated to America in May of that year, settling in Fresno. A graduate of the Chouinard Art Institute, Mary taught drawing and illustration at Art Center from 1954 to 1986, as well as at the Kann Institute of Art. Mary also worked in costume design at Hollywood Costume and several Hollywood studios. Her personal work included cubist and collage style paintings. She was married to Art Center faculty member George Harris from 1942 until his death in 2001. She died on February 18, 2013.

Scope and content

Mostly artwork and some documents from the estate of Mary Vartikian, who taught at Art Center from the mid-1950s - 1986. Collection includes: numerous sketches and drawings, Art Center documents and publications, 11 costume design paintings, slides of Vartikian's work and of her teaching, 6 paintings, portfolio of photographic prints taken by Vartikian, 3 photographic prints of Mary Vartikian and George Harris, portfolio of student work, 1 collage (design for "Diggins" painting), George Harris book, "Nonsense and Numbers."
