Biographical history

George Porcari was born in Lima, Peru on May 01, 1952. His family moved to the United States when he was 10½ and settled in Gardena, California. After graduating from a technical high school which trained him to be an auto mechanic, he moved to New York City where he eventually worked at the Strand bookstore. He moved back to California to attend Art Center and graduated with a Master’s degree in Fine Art in 1987. Having been a student worker in the library, he was promoted to Acquisitions Librarian in March 1988 and spent almost his entire career in that position. He retired from ArtCenter’s library on June 16, 2017.

Scope and content

George Porcari discusses his early years growing up in Gardena, his wanderlust which took him to New York, and his return to California. He talks about the Illustration and Fine Art Departments at ArtCenter and explains how his lifelong love of books led him to his dream job as Acquisitions Librarian. He reflects on changes in the library during his almost 30 years, especially in regards to collection development and employee camaraderie.
