Biographical history

Paula Goodman was born in 1949 in Göteborg, Sweden and immigrated to Los Angeles when she was four years old. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley, she went to the University of California, Los Angeles for her master’s degree. While at UCLA, she earned a teaching credential from their Lab School. After years of teaching K-12, she left the profession to become a movie subtitler and then an advertising copywriter. She was offered the opportunity to teach at Art Center in the Advertising Department which led to her becoming Associate Chair and stints as acting Department Chair. Ultimately, she joined ArtCenter Extension’s department to help expand it with the creation of the kids program and the Summer Institute for Teachers.

Paula Goodman discusses her early years growing up in Los Angeles, her school years, and her professional life in advertising and education. She talks about early influences in her life which seeded her lifelong love of learning and led to her becoming an educator. She reflects on her experiences at Art Center in the Advertising Department, both as a teacher and an acting Chair. Finally, she describes her role in the expansion of Art Center’s Extension Programs (formerly Public Programs).
